This illustrated book published by Age Exchange in 1985  to go with the first version of the show features original stories and photos donated by contributors.

These recollections of older people on matters of health and social welfare before the NHS are most timely, reminding us as they do that the Welfare State was and remains a necessity which must be most stoutly defended now that it is coming under such pressure.

As with all other Age Exchange publications, the words come directly from a series of interviews with pensioners from across London, with a particular emphasis on South East London where the Age Exchange Theatre Company had its base. These interviews have been edited, arranged under headings for the ease for the reader, and illustrated with contemporary photographs form local archives and from the contributors themselves, into a lively and accessible collage. We hope you enjoy “Can We Afford The Doctor” as much as we have enjoyed compiling it.
